Structural Relationships Within Complex Predicates

چکیده

Complex predicates are a highly salient feature of Korean sentences, and consequently have received a great deal of attention in the linguistic literature. As there have been many excellent papers written on aspects of the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic relationships between the parts of many di erent kinds of complex predicates, it is quite a daunting task to take up the general topic of complex predicates without running the risk of merely recapitulating earlier scholarship. For this paper, I have tried to focus on certain aspects of the syntax of complex predicates which have not received much previous attention, but which have very important consequences for our understanding of what combinatory mechanisms are available at least in Korean grammar, and possibly universally.

The Interlanguage of Persian Learners of Italian: a Focus on Complex Predicates

This paper aims at investigating the acquisition of Italian complex predicates by native speakers of Persian. Complex predication is not as pervasive a phenomenon in Italian as it is in Persian. Yet Italian native speakers use complex predicates productively; spontaneous data show that Persian learners of Italian seem to be perfectly aware of Italian complex predicates and use this familiar fea...

Deriving Topological Relationships Between Simple Regions with Holes

Topological relationships between objects in space are of great importance in many disciplines. Due to the lack of local topological information between components, i.e. faces, in the model of topological relationships between complex regions, recently, localized topological relationships have been defined for complex regions based on the relationships between simple regions with holes. However...

Developments in Spatio-Temporal Query Languages

Integrating spatio-temporal data as abstract data types into already existing data models is a promising approach to creating spatio-temporal query languages. In this context, an important new class of queries can be identified which is concerned with developments of spatial objects over time, that is, queries ask especially for changes in spatial relationships. Based on a definition of the not...

The Composition of (Dis)Continuous Predicates: Lexical or Syntactic?

Recent lexicalist analyses of predicates expressed by syntactically independent elements, raise central questions concerning the domain in which such complex predicates are composed. Should they be composed in phrase structure or within the lexicon? We will argue that a demonstration of syntactic separability for pieces of complex predicates is independent of whether such predicates should be v...

Argument Composition and Linearization: Korean Complex Predicates and Scrambling

This paper deals with the formation of complex predicates and some interesting scrambling facts in Korean. First, we extend the notion of complex predicates to include various noun-verb combinations by providing syntactic and semantic evidence. Within the HPSG framework, we then propose a general schema based on argument composition, which can be used for different types of complex predicates. ...
